In this episode of Project Insights, PMA’s Amanda Donovan speaks with Noelle Mykolenko, a leadership development expert at Trusted Advisor Associates, and Sal Agosto, PMA’s Mid-Atlantic Managing Director, about what it truly means to be a trusted advisor. Unlike roles rooted solely in technical knowledge, trusted advisors blend expertise with interpersonal skills to build confidence, empower decision-making, and create alignment between clients and teams.
Noelle describes the trusted advisor role as building trust, encouraging collaboration, and strengthening professional relationships. These skills aren’t reserved for a select few—anyone can develop them through intentional practice and self-awareness. With experience training more than 750 professionals, she emphasizes that empathy, consistency in communication, and a clear focus on the client’s bigger picture allow advisors to create safe spaces where clients can be open and confident in their decisions.
Sal reinforces this by explaining how trusted advisors move beyond showcasing expertise. The real value lies in focusing on the client’s needs and creating psychological safety so they can share openly without fear of being wrong or judged. He shares a powerful example from his career—when a construction project stalled due to miscommunication across departments, he helped initiate transparent, cross-team meetings. That shift in trust and collaboration allowed the project to finish two months ahead of schedule and reshaped the client’s entire experience.
Both Noelle and Sal agree that trust, once broken, can be repaired—but it requires humility. Admitting a mistake, asking clients what they need to move forward, and making a clear commitment to change are essential. Assuming what will fix the relationship can further erode trust; instead, advisors must listen closely and respond with accountability.
Trusted advisors influence more than project outcomes—they shape how owners, teams, and consultants experience the work. Adopting this mindset can strengthen your relationships and elevate your leadership impact even if you don’t carry the title.
