Overview

This $700 million Arizona Department of Transportation project in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration and the Maricopa Association of Governments involves developing improvements to the Interstate 10 Broadway Curve between Interstate 17 and SR Loop 202. This 11-mile stretch of roadway is a key commerce corridor and has been experiencing increasing levels of traffic over the past several years, especially during the weekday morning and evening peak hours.

Major design improvements include widening I-10 to six general purpose lanes and two high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes in each direction, adding a fourth general purpose lane in each direction, and adding a collector-distributor road system. This configuration eliminates the need for drivers to make lane changes to exit I-10 and increases safety and traffic flow. Scope also involves modifying connections to improve traffic flow and create HOV lane connections, including construction of new bridges and SR 143 improvements; modifying the interchange of I-10 and US 60, including improvements to US 60; constructing three pedestrian bridges; and building sound and retaining walls.
